Professor Ojumu completed his undergraduate studies at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in IleIfe, where he graduated with First-Class Honors in Chemistry. He pursued a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering at the same institution, completing it in 1999. From 2001 to 2008, he worked as a Research Officer I at the Engineering Materials Development Institute (EMDI) in Nigeria, focusing on the development of engineering materials from biomass.

In 2004, Professor Ojumu began his PhD in Biohydrometallurgy at the University of Cape Town, completing it in 2008. He then undertook a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at UCT before joining the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) as a Senior Lecturer in 2009. During his tenure, he pioneered the application of electrochemistry to elucidate certain phenomena in biohydrometallurgy.

He served as the Head of Programme (HOP) of Chemical Engineering at the Cape Town Campus of CPUT from 2010 to 2017, overseeing all academic programs. From 2017 to 2020, he managed the portfolio of Research Technology Innovation and Partnership (RTIP) for the Faculty of Engineering & Built Environment at CPUT, chairing the Faculty Higher Degrees Committee, Faculty Ethics Committee, and Faculty Research Committee. He was appointed as an Associate Professor in 2011 and was rated in the National Research Foundation (NRF) Y category. In 2018, he was promoted to full Professor.

Professor Ojumu is a prolific researcher with over 100 publications, having supervised more than 10 doctoral and 25 master’s graduates. His current citation count is 4600, with an H-index of 35. In 2014, he served as Chair of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), Western Cape branch. He is a member of the South African Institute of Chemical Engineers and an International Scientific Committee member of the International Biohydrometallurgy Symposium (IBS). His research interests include Bioprocess and Environmental Engineering. He is an NRF C2-rated researcher and has received numerous research grants both locally and internationally.

Currently, Professor Ojumu is the Principal Investigator and Project Manager of a R65 million international collaborative research project between South Africa and Japan (SATREPS), focusing on the development of a carbon recycling system to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the cement and concrete industries. He also serves on various NRF funding panels and is the Chair of Research and Postgraduate Administration in the Department of Chemical Engineering at CPUT.

Professor Ojumu is married to Dr. Titilayo Ojumu, and they have four children. He enjoys playing table tennis and is currently learning golf.
